Tracy Recommends:
Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
I adore Mama Zora, as I call her, not just for her prolific writing, both rich in culture and deft and beautiful in language but also for her independence and boldness as a literary activist. I deeply appreciate her dedication to recording and sharing African American cultural gems and stories that might have otherwise been lost to us.
The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison
Other favorite authors/books include Maya Angelou (I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings), James Baldwin (The Fire Next Time), and J. California Cooper (Some Soul to Keep). Their extraordinary command of language and powerful storytelling give me literary shivers. All of them greatly influence and inspire me as a writer. They ignite a sense of freedom in me as I develop my voice and bring forth my stories.
