The inventive Halfway Dead by Terry Maggert follows a lively white witch, Carlie, protector of the town of Halfway in the Adirondack mountainside.

The tale begins in the woods where Carlie is fighting off a wendigo to the death. The heroine of the story is a spunky cook that is later confronted by a mysterious stranger asking for help finding a near extinct species of tree.
